Description:
Adults:  Body short, very deep, extremely laterally compressed. Upper and lower profiles similar.
Head profile very steep and straight, angular at top. Silvery, back with bluey tint.
Juveniles:  Small juveniles with elongate pelvic and dorsal spines black, a dark bar through eye. 4-5 broken bars on body.

Ecology
Occurs in small schools often near the bottom in shallow coastal waters over sandy or hard bottoms. It is often seen around pilings and bridges. Adults feed on small crabs, shrimps, fishes, and worms
