CALAPPIDAE
Flame Box Crab
Calappa flammea
Size
Carapace width to 10cm/ 4"

Description
:
The carapace of this crab is rounded in front, almost straight behind. The hind margins form a thin roof over the legs, partially covering them, whilst the claw arms fold neatly across the front, linking in with the carapace forming a neat and strong barrier (see second photo)....as a result of thesese 2 features, they can appear as a neat and strong defensive dome, with no protruding parts. The large claws are flattened, triangular, with a
crest above, and the fingers are strongly bent downwards.
The color is cream to greyish, with wavy
reddish brown to lavender lines forming a network, becoming more open towards the rear and bandings on the legs.

Ecology
Live on sandy bottoms, sea grass beds etc down to 15m (some reports to 250ft)  and often bury themselves.
