Description:
Head and body qrev brown to reddish brown; 5 small black spots along rear edge of eve; lips with dark bars; bodv with 7 dark bars (that extend onto dorsal fin base) separated bv broad pale interspaces. 2nd last bar on tail base incomplete, usually with 2 spots above (may merge to form a (sometimes incomplete) "Y")
Male: head with small blue-white spots on side, a black spot behind 1st dorsal spine: pectoral fin of female with 2 red spots on base
Ecology
This species is associated with coral reefs and is found only around islands at shallow depths to 6 m (20 ft). A very timid species.
Life Cycle
Lays eggs in the benthos. Larvae have a pelagic phase before reaching maturity.
